About Tall Camper
I'm Josh Tomlinson. I'm 6'2", I live in Lincoln, California, and I camp and backpack with gear that mostly wasn't designed for me.
The problem this site exists to solve
Standard outdoor gear is sized for a standard body, and the standard stops around six feet. A Regular sleeping bag fits to about 6'0". A typical one-person tent floor is 84–88 inches long — before you subtract the sloping walls that eat the ends. A standard sleeping pad is 72" × 20", so at 6'2" plus a pillow, your feet are off the end before the night starts.
The major review sites test great gear, but almost none of them publish a dedicated tall guide or rank by the numbers tall buyers actually need: fits-to height, shoulder girth, floor length. The "tall" pages that do rank are often templated lists pushing budget car-camping gear — sometimes recommending products that fail their own tall threshold. That's the gap Tall Camper fills: one author, one body type, verified numbers.
My methodology
- Fit is the first filter. If it doesn't fit a tall sleeper — with the fits-to number to prove it — it doesn't get ranked, full stop.
- Specs are verified against manufacturer data (fits-to height, fill weight and power, girth, floor length), and where a brand's "long" label is generous, the guide says so. Example: one bag in our first guide is flagged because its Long tops out at 6'5", not the 6'6" the rest promise.
- Hands-on is labelled, never implied. My Sea to Summit Spark Long (bought in 2020) anchors the sleeping bag guide because I've slept in it for years. Everything I haven't personally used is labelled research-ranked. When I test something new, the entry gets updated and re-labelled.
- Rankings aren't for sale. Guides are scored on a published rubric — fit, warmth honesty, weight, value — plus an explicit check that commission rates didn't order the list. See the affiliate disclosure for how the site makes money.
- Prices and specs are snapshots. Each guide states when its numbers were checked; check the retailer's current listing before buying.
What I'm building, in order
- Long sleeping bags for tall people — live now
- Long & wide sleeping pads
- Backpacking tents for tall people (floor-length sorted, failures named)
- Tall-torso backpacks · long/wide quilts · tall camp chairs
If you're tall and there's a piece of gear you can't find honest fit information on, that's exactly the kind of gap this site is for.
