The 10 Best Wide Sleeping Bags for Big Guys

A standard mummy bag has about 59–64" of shoulder girth. A broad sleeper's shoulders, measured properly, can need 70–80". That gap is why big guys describe sleeping bags the way you'd describe a straitjacket — and why this page ranks on one thing first: published girth. No verified girth number, no ranking. Straight talk about the author: I'm 6'3" and I built this site on fit — I'm the tall guy, adjacent to this problem rather than the biggest guy in the room. So this list runs on the manufacturers' measured numbers, not on a body I don't have. If the girth isn't printed, it isn't here.

#1Widest backpacking bag

Big Agnes Anvil Horn 15 — Wide Long

Why it ranks here: 80" of chest girth in a 15°F down backpacking bag that still fits 6'6" — the Anvil Horn Wide Long is the widest serious trail bag made, full stop. Big Agnes's pad sleeve (fits 20" and 25" pads from the pads guide) means all that room stays centred on the pad instead of rotating around you. At 3 lb 1 oz it's not the lightest way to sleep wide; it's the most complete one.

Who it's for: big and tall backpackers who refuse the straitjacket and will carry a pound for room.

#2Widest published girths anywhere

Big Agnes Diamond Park 0 — Wide Long

Why it ranks here: Read the girth line: 80" chest, 74" hip, 64" foot. No other bag in this guide — and few anywhere — publishes a footbox that wide; this is a sleeping bag dimensioned like furniture. It's a 0°F basecamp bag (600-fill DownTek, 40 oz of fill, 4 lb 14 oz), and its Flex Pad Sleeve takes 25" and even 30" pads, so the widest pads in our guide pair with it. Too heavy for long trails, unbeatable where the truck or the pulk does the carrying.

Who it's for: the biggest sleepers, winter basecamps, and anyone whose feet have never once fit a footbox.

#3Best wide bag for actual backpacking

Western Mountaineering Alpinlite Long

Why it ranks here: Western Mountaineering's wide-cut answer: the Alpinlite is cut noticeably roomier than WM's ultralight race bags, with 595 g of 850+ down in a Long that fits 6'6" at about 2 lb 1 oz. It's the wide pick for people who count ounces and shoulders — premium-priced, decade-durable, and the bag our side sleepers guide also shortlists for its turn-over room.

Who it's for: broad backpackers who want one premium bag for cold trails.

#4Lightest wide cut

Western Mountaineering MegaLite Long

Why it ranks here: The MegaLite is WM's wider-cut 30°F bag — same design intent as the Alpinlite, warmer-weather rating, and a 1 lb 11 oz Long weight that makes it the lightest genuinely roomy bag here. For three-season use by a broad sleeper who hikes real miles, this is the efficiency pick: the room of a wide cut without the basecamp bulk of the bags above it.

Who it's for: broad three-season backpackers counting grams.

Deep-snow camp — the Kodiak's natural habitat, wide cut and all.
#5Winter wide

Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF Long

Why it ranks here: The winter entry in WM's wide-cut family: a 0°F Kodiak in a Long that fits 6'6", built on the roomier pattern rather than the brand's trim alpine cut. Broad winter campers are the most underserved buyers in the industry — most 0°F bags are tailored for climbers — and this is the credible answer: serious warmth, real width, WM construction. (Full hands-on winter testing on this site waits for my own winter bag's guide — my Marmot Lithium 0 Long — in a follow-up; this entry is spec-ranked like everything else here.)

Who it's for: broad winter campers and hunters who sleep out in real cold.

#6Widest published shoulder girth

Feathered Friends Flicker UL 20 Long

Why it ranks here: Feathered Friends publishes the full girth line — 62" shoulder / 48" hip / 39" foot — and 62" is the widest shoulder number in this guide. The Flicker also unzips completely flat, which converts girth into freedom: as a quilt there's effectively no circumference limit at all. 950+ fill down at ~1 lb 13 oz in Long makes it the lightest serious entry here; the $579 Long price is the toll.

Who it's for: broad ultralighters and sprawlers who'll pay premium for published numbers and options.

Curled and comfortable — the Spoon spends its width at the elbows and knees.
#7Spoon shape — width where it moves

NEMO Disco 15 Long

Why it ranks here: The Disco doesn't win a tape-measure contest; it wins the shape contest. The Spoon cut adds room at the elbows and knees — the two places a big sleeper actually pushes — while trimming dead space elsewhere, so it sleeps wider than its girth line suggests. It's #1 in our side sleepers guide for the same reason, fits 6'6" in Long, and carries a friendlier price than the premium wide cuts above it.

Who it's for: big-ish movers and side sleepers who need functional room more than maximum inches.

#8Wide synthetic Spoon

NEMO Forte 20 — Long Wide

Why it ranks here: The Forte takes the Spoon shape, widens it further in Long Wide, and fills it with recycled synthetic insulation at $199.95. For big sleepers in wet climates — or anyone who doesn't want to baby a down bag — it's the accessible wide option: real shape, real width, no four-figure anxiety. Weight is the usual synthetic toll (3 lb 2 oz in Long; the Wide runs a bit more — check the listing).

Who it's for: big sleepers in damp places, and first-bag buyers who need width on a budget.

Teton Sports Celsius XXL

Why it ranks here: 90" long × 39" wide, rectangular, $99.99. As pure square inches per dollar nothing in this guide is within a mile of it, and for car camping, cabin bunks, and hunting camp it's the correct answer — also ranked in the side sleepers guide for sprawl. It's synthetic and ≈8.5 lb, so the backpack stays home. Know which trip you're buying for and this bag never disappoints.

Who it's for: the biggest sleepers on the smallest budgets, wherever a vehicle does the carrying.

First light in camp — the Burrow is the quilt that frees wide sleepers from girth entirely.
#10The quilt exception

Hammock Gear Burrow 20 — Long/Wide

Why it ranks here: Labelled honestly: this is a quilt, not a bag — and for the widest sleepers that's precisely the point. A quilt has no fixed circumference to bust out of; in Long/Wide with the 60" width Hammock Gear recommends for ground use, it drapes instead of binds. 850-fill down, ~27.3 oz in Long, $284.95 at Garage Grown Gear when in stock. Ground sleepers need a good pad seal at the edges (see the pads guide); hammock sleepers are its home crowd. It closes this list because for some big sleepers, the right "wide bag" is the one that gives up on being a bag.

Who it's for: the widest sleepers, hammock campers, and anyone done negotiating with zippers.

Wide-fit FAQ

How much girth do I actually need?

Measure your shoulder circumference (tape around shoulders and upper arms), then add roughly 10" — that's your minimum working girth, per the method in the size & fit guide. If the result is over ~66", standard mummies are out and this page is your shopping list.

Why do some entries say "wide cut" instead of a number?

Because Western Mountaineering sells its roomier pattern on the cut's reputation rather than a headline girth line. They're ranked below every bag with fully published girths — the table shows you exactly which evidence each ranking stands on.

Does a wider bag sleep colder?

Extra dead air is real but manageable — and a too-tight bag is colder still, because compressed insulation doesn't loft. Fit that lets the down expand beats a theoretically snug bag you compress flat at the shoulders.

What pad pairs with a wide bag?

At least 25" wide — the list in the pads guide — and note that the two Big Agnes bags here have sleeves sized for 25" (and for the Diamond Park, 30") pads, which keeps all that width where it belongs.

How this list was built — read this

  • The evidence rule: a bag appears here only with a published girth, a published dimension (the Teton rectangle), a width-based design (the Burrow quilt), or — ranked deliberately lower — a manufacturer's documented wide cut (the WM entries). If a brand won't publish or document the room, the bag isn't ranked, however good its reviews are.
  • Author honesty: I'm 6'3" and broad-shouldered enough to hate a slim mummy, but I am not a big guy, and this page doesn't borrow a body it doesn't have. Rankings rest on the published numbers in each table and consistent reports from bigger owners — not on hands-on claims. None of these ten is my bag; my own bags anchor the long bags guide and the size guide, labelled there.
  • Scoring rubric: verified girth/room 40% · Long availability and fits-to 20% · warmth for the weight 20% · value 20%. Commission rates are not an input — see the disclosure.
  • About the photos: the images on this page are illustrative stock scenes of camp and tent life, not product shots of the named bags — the verified girth figures in each entry are what the ranking rests on. Every photo is a real photograph from a free stock library, credited in the IMAGE_CREDITS.md file that ships with this site.
One more time, plainly: no bag on this page is hands-on for me — this guide is research-ranked on published girth, with the evidence standard printed in the methodology and the limits of my own frame stated in the introduction. My hands-on bags live in the long bags guide. Full disclosure.
